Secure & Resilient Connectivity - Energy Services Organisation
The Context
Organisations operating across multiple locations — particularly those supporting field-based or offshore operations — rely heavily on secure, reliable connectivity to maintain productivity and operational oversight. When systems must exchange real-time data between remote environments and central headquarters, even minor connectivity limitations can introduce delays, risk, and inefficiency.
This case centres on a UK-based energy services organisation employing over 200 staff and delivering specialist pipeline solutions globally. Their teams regularly operated across distributed sites, including offshore environments, using automated engineering and welding systems that generated critical operational data.
The business depended on consistent connectivity between operating locations and headquarters to upload performance metrics, catalogue project milestones, and allow engineering teams to remotely analyse and diagnose equipment. However, their existing infrastructure lacked the resilience, flexibility, and security required to support these demands at scale.
We were engaged to provide network design and consultancy services to strengthen connectivity resilience while improving cyber security across the organisation.

The Challenge
The primary challenge was ensuring reliable, secure communication between geographically dispersed sites and the company’s headquarters systems.

Field teams needed to upload operational data in real time, while system managers required remote access to specialist machinery for monitoring and diagnostics. The existing network architecture struggled to support these requirements consistently, limiting operational efficiency.
Alongside connectivity concerns, the organisation needed stronger cyber security controls. With users, devices, and systems operating across multiple environments, maintaining consistent protection and policy enforcement had become increasingly complex.
The business required an infrastructure capable of supporting secure collaboration across locations, while maintaining data integrity and enabling future growth.
The Solution
As with all engagements, we began by assessing the existing network environment and identifying opportunities to improve resilience, visibility, and security.

Improving Connectivity Resilience
Connectivity reliability was prioritised from the outset. A secure, centrally managed network architecture was implemented using enterprise-grade firewall appliances across headquarters and operational locations.
Each site was configured to support dual internet connectivity and secure site-to-site VPN connectivity, enabling automatic failover and uninterrupted communication between locations. This ensured that operational data could be transmitted reliably regardless of local connection issues.
Secure Site-to-Site Networking
To unify the organisation’s global operations, secure AutoVPN connectivity was deployed across all sites. This created seamless, encrypted communication between headquarters, branch offices, and active operating locations, allowing engineering teams to securely access systems wherever they were deployed.
The result was a consistent network experience across the business, simplifying management while improving performance.
Strengthening Cyber Security
Security policies were implemented organisation-wide to align with corporate cyber security standards. These included:
- Edge intrusion prevention
- Anti-malware protection
- Content filtering controls
- Encrypted DNS security across all devices and locations
Wireless infrastructure was integrated into the wider security framework, ensuring consistent protection regardless of how users connected to the network.
The Results
The organisation now operates with a significantly more resilient and secure connectivity platform supporting its global operations.
Key outcomes included:
- Improved productivity through immediate and reliable site-to-headquarters connectivity
- Enhanced real-time visibility into engineering and welding project progress
- Stronger protection of company data across all geographical locations
- Secure remote access capabilities that enabled home working during the COVID-19 pandemic
Most importantly, the business gained a scalable network foundation capable of supporting future operational expansion while maintaining strong security governance.
Through a structured approach to network design and ongoing consultancy, the organisation now benefits from connectivity that actively supports — rather than constrains — its operational objectives.
